Do you need help with your IPS site? I sure do.

Recommended Posts

Sidebar Note: The button on the skin I"m using now from this site ( "twilight"), the button to start new topic is so DARK one can hardly find it. I just knew where it should be.

I am an IPS users, I have been using Matt's software since he was in college and authoring ICON BOARD.

WELL, since this is open topic.. Sherri has given me opportunity to BEG FOR HELP. I need help in almost every area for a Non-profit Gaming Community that has been online for 20 years. I've done almost everything by myself, but now I find everything is way to complicated for a "one man show". I think Sherri of this site can relate to how much work it is to go solo. So... what I'm looking for is people that have similar needs and interest to help me with my site... and I and the people involved in turn can share our experience and expertise. IPS system is not all that "simple to use" any more.. .it takes someone practiced and educated on the software. Should I mention the problems we have when IPS upgrades software?

So lets think on this for a moment because I'm sure you think that this post has nothing you might be interested in.

I am a Manger, I am NOT a web guy, a server admin type of guy, don't have any Voip experience, not a graphics type person, can't do VIDs, .. in short I don't have much experience. So how did I manage to keep a community site going for 20 years?  Simple: by finding folks like you that have an invested interest in the software you use for your community or just running your business.  My staff has been with me for 15, 16 years on a voluntary basis! We help each other. Most of us visiting this site USE IPS SOFTWARE, we all have a community of sorts, we all have needs for our site ... we all have questions and wants, such as:

How did they do that !

Where can I get a skin to fit my needs? Who's the best Skin Maker ?

Where in the hell in the ACP can I find what I need to do. (Sometimes I spend more time LOOKING for that area in the ACP then the actually work I need to do.. so annoying and waste of time).

I could go on.. but you get the idea.

Do you see any value to this idea/proposal ? Maybe you might have a better idea? Maybe this post is a waste of time and space ?

My site:  http://www.tidesofwar.net

My VOIP: Team Speak,  and Skype

We have our own IM server and use google talk and our own ToW talk. Pur sever can interact with almost any IM's such as AOL, Yahoo, MSN, etc

We have our own email server.

Our server belongs to us and runs on Linux and housed at a professional hosting company.

Contact me via this board if interested or have questions.. or maybe to just tell me where I might find folks that would be interested.

Really, no one would be interested at all ?

How about just being friends and sharing some experience ?  2.png

I think I need some type of user group. I don't like using IPS (support/forums)  ... its really not for me.. to tech I think. I get desperate and HAVE to go there from time to time. Now I'm not a complete dummy on IPS, I have been with Matt and his ICON Board... for a very long time. I bout the first of the Legacy Lic.'s !

Shameless bump, I know.. so spank me! Told ya... I'm desperate.

Hello Tbar 2.png so not sure what the post is for sorry maybe long day at the office, or way to much time with the kids lol but if feedback for your site that easy can provide that or what the best way make changes to your site again i can do that, like many people been using IPB now IPS Suite for 12 years now and seen the changes and the confusing new layouts that find time get used to or how make items work.

ALL of what you say. For me, personally, I hate IPS forums  ... what I like is buddies that use the same software where we can trade tips, tricks and how too's. Its all about "how do I do that" because most of us can take care of 'content' and layout... but the ACP and where to find things... cost me a lot of time. I also find that what I'm looking for.. is in a place in the ACP I would not think of checking. Plus when IPS comes out with major new versions ...  its nice to have people to reference with .

I'm thinking of a self made small user group using "clubs" maybe on our sites, we can use a common voice or IM platform. I use them all, so no problem on my end.

I'm thinking we get together once a week on some time good for all of us. I'm thinking about and hour unless we get really involved with something.

I can see where you coming from maybe people maybe moved to IPS from VB or Xenforo or another form of software or could be newbie and finding items or understand the forum tools can be hard my personal hate has been pages, i hate it with all my heart its not the best tool in the Suite to many item with limited info but other part of the forum i know where and how to use.

Well we might start with something  simple .. like a "club". We can be Sherrie's Helping Hands as a club name, and start right here on this board as a focal point. We can help Sherrie and  our self at the same time. Then  we can go from there. We need a place as a focal point.. so why not here to start IF Sherri allows same.. ?

Your  thoughts ..

first need know what item need helping with so get best advice provided.

First off, even though WotSit made the Club, we need to know Sherri is on board with this... so I sent her email.

The first Items will be the new Themes for 4.2 that she is working on. Hopefully we find enough that far fewer changes/corrections are needed.

I don't think we can just start up .. we need a little co-ordination via Sherri.. or perhaps Wotsit since he has some level of permissions on IPBTheme.com and IPS CMS.

So at the moment, we wait for input from Sherri and what to go look at etc. Wotsit might want to play a role as Team Leader as he may have more time to monitor our work etc. Keep in mind I don't have anything particular in mind or making anything complicated... simply Helping Hands, but we need to know what help is needed at the time. We have to have input and directive. When we have some type of protocol and familiarity with each other... the we can also review the sites we are responsible for, it maybe one site or several.

All of what we speak of is "voluntary". so when you don't have time... you don't, and when you do have time... you do.

My site right now is a mess and not because of IPS. We recently installed an SSL Cert for home tidesofwar.net This is giving us way to much problem in re-directs. Partially sever settings we can correct, but the other part is the interaction of server/IPS CMS. CMS Edits on "Menu Manager" for example need https:// and after each edit/publish the https://

is stripped out. In some cases you can't even 'edit' a url !

Somethings I just don't understand like the following

Hi Todd Markham,

Re: Enabling SSL breaks frontpage

Hello,

Its not clear here what you are switching on and off in order to get the issue and remove the issue. Please could you clarify? Is this when you switch back and forth from http to https in conf_global, or when you enable/disable ssl on your server?

Kind Regards,

Marc Stridgen

( Using Theme: Tides of War on this site; The quote above, is an example of text being too light or the background is too dark for skin we are using on this site, so we report this as we use the skins. )

I think.. the answer to above is 'both' !   I have a server admin who knows the server (Linux Cent OS), but he does not know the  IPS-CMS. Anyway.. that is an example of how our experience might be able to jump out and say " hey I had that problem and here is what I did to fix or get around it.

Enough from me.... those are my thoughts. Your input is necessary to make this a working team.

Oh.. and I'll sponsor the group with beer and cc cookies !

Once you get there.. take a mouse over look at some of the menu items.. and notice what the URL is. These were all edited for https:// yet it keeps striping them out. Got to be a setting someplace.. or perhaps we are using the wrong method to use the IPS front page as our actual entrance point to the site (Home - like in index.php )Me? No idea... yet.

First can ask where did get SSL from ? did you install the certifcate into your cPanel or Control Panel that your site runs ? if take look over my site sorry this is naughty but my site is rival so to speak https://ipsthemes.com/ you notice its show the locked image this make SSL work correctly and will not break your site. I like to point out SSL is FREE if people buy this STOP don't buy SSL certicates its item has not cost and if need help getting one go to https://letsencrypt.org/ this will provide you certifcate for FREE.

My next point will be have ticked SSL option in Admin CP if so untick it i need make this point clear ticking SSL login for Admin logins don't make site safe and could lead somestage google banning you from there site to find this go to Admin CP very top have search bar type in ssl you now get this menu

Screenshot_114.thumb.png.3c755f2747196878a8f130c542ed0cd4.png

click on use https one and make sure that don't have this ticked

Screenshot_115.thumb.png.fb1599fedb8ff40fb2a72be9b315e000.png

this will not give you ssl certifcate just turns http to https but can break site why this settings added i have no idea worse setting in Admin CP

Hey thank Pete, I'm going to forward this link to my Server Admin and take a look at those ACP settings you pointed out.

Maybe I did say to much in a public post.. Wotsit might be able to fix this up, not sure frankly if I made to much public or not... but you might be right.

As you see Tbar my knowledge is very big i know lots that can help many people i learn lot myself but picked up knowledge from other people and once know where items are and what they can do for you your site can grow with you. And let me know if that solves your problem if not there another item might need look at within the .htaccess file if use FURL (Friendly URL) and also have the option within Admin CP to check your FURL.

Re: Enabling SSL breaks frontpage

Hello,

Just spoken to my colleague on this. It seems what you are doing is having your server redirect to https as well as the software. You need to not have your server hosting redirects, and only do the conf_global, which will do that part for you.

Kind Regards,

Marc Stridgen

OK, This might help also, so I'll pass it ALL on to my Server Admin.

Hey fahl,

I can make comment on the "basics" but not the technical stuff.

1) You need content. They will find you if you have content. Unless your setup does not let in the spiders(bots). content is key. Site needs to look Pro and yours does.

2) Promotion.. lets talk the free stuff you can do. Look at your signature on this board.. spiff that up. Advertise/Promotion right there! Avatar.. same thing. You want to be able to use the same signature and avatar on all sites you go to ... advertise.

oops.. have to go, have appointment.. more to come.. me thinks.

Do you need help with your IPS CMS?  I do 2.png

All above will help get google and other search engine to you if need more details please ask might look doing many simple videos or web chats people that need help on getting sites working 100%.

The next item noticed when looking site content is limited get friends or family to post more content the better, also footer area setup as themes default this looks bad when visit a site turn off or change the footer, you also have social buttons on but nothing setup so not pointing to your page again turn off or setup.

My next one for everyone item that IPS don't share how to speedup your site ! yes its very easy and simple all site should have .htaccress file good for FURL or add this clever code.
